Considerations Before You Start An Internet Business
The biggest stepping stone to starting an online business if deciding how and what to do. Should I try to sell a product from my home? Should I try to sell products for other people? Should I try to sell at all?
Obviously, there are questions that you only you can answer, and the answers will determine the best way for you to proceed. In general terms, there are a number of considerations to starting an internet business, just as there would be for starting any business.
Aside from anything else, there are two things that you must consider before starting a business online:
1. Are you prepared to commit? The most valuable asset you offer when you start a business - any business - is your time. Make sure you have enough time, or enough patience, to say committed to starting. Starting is the hardest part, once you get your business rolling, you will enjoy the freedom of having more time to do things other than work! But get prepared, you may be in store for sleepless nights, long days, or giving up that hobby for a while.
2. Speaking of long days and nights, discuss this with your family. Get ready for your family to NOT like your idea. Working on your own tends to have a "maverick" mentality that some people don't understand. You might be considered a non-conformist.
Also, if you work from home - I can assure you that other people in your home will not understand that you are WORKING, at home. You need to set office hours, time when you absolutely are not available at home. You are not available for personal phone calls to the house, you are not available for repairmen or deliveries (except for your business, of course), you are not available for watching the TV show that is on right now, you are at WORK! I assure you this will be one of your greatest challenges ahead. If this is not your experience, pat yourself on the back and consider yourself very lucky.
Take the time to learn as much as you can. I shouldn't have to say this, but stay away from anything that promises instant results, or loads of cash with little effort. Once you are prepared, it's time to start thinking about what you will do to make money online. If you are already have a product or service, and are just taking it to the next level with an online "sales machine", then you ahead of the game.
Most of us don't have a clue where to start looking. Here a few ideas to get you started:
1. Consultant - Is there a particular skill or knowledge set that you have? Do others have a need for your skills and knowledge? If so, consulting could be a lucrative industry for you. You should use your website to clearly define your abilities, sell your services, and display customer testimonials. There are a number of places online where you could promote your services, a google search for your specific field will show you what is available for your particular field.
2. Blogger - Yes, there are plenty of people making a very good living by just adding a few posts to a blog every now and then. You can be sure there is more to it than that. You don't have to be a pro, but you should have decent writing skills and command of the language. You will need to find a niche topic and zero in on it for your blog. There are tons of places online to promote your blog once it is running. You can start a blog for about $30.
Remember, you can always add a blog to an existing website and monetize it too.
3. Affiliate Marketer - Pretty simple concept. You promote other's services or products on your website. When a customer makes a purchase, you get a commission. You'll need to put a GREAT deal of time into learning the ropes if you plan to be an affiliate marketer - there is simply no other way to learn how to do it. Consider reading as much as you can on the Forums at Abestweb.com. Check out AffiliateClassroom.com. There is a great demand for good affiliate marketers.
4. Wholesaling, Auction Sales, and eBay Hook up with a good drop-shipper and you don't even have to carry inventory. Again, you will have to fine-tune your skills to make a good living at this, but the best way to learn is to do it. Check out the Ebay Learning Center.
5. Ecommerce - Slightly different from Affiliate Marketing in that you have to carry your own inventory or provide your own services. You will accept sales from your own website.
Choosing a business that is interesting to you, or one that you feel passionate about, will ensure success in your venture. Consistency is critical.
You should be unafraid to make mistakes because mistakes are the best way to learn. Fortunately, when you are talking about the internet, mistakes won't cost you a fortune. If you experience setbacks, keep moving forward. Once you start to see your website traffic grow and produce revenue, you'll be glad you stuck it out.
